Work-integrated learning (WIL) helps students apply classroom knowledge to real-world settings. It combines academic learning with hands-on experience in workplaces or practice environments, allowing students to see how their studies connect to the community. WIL creates valuable growth opportunities by linking students, academic institutions, and host organizations. 

WIL opportunities available

³Õºº¾ãÀÖ²¿ provides work-integrated learning opportunities in several programs and is expanding its offerings. Currently, we offer the following types of WIL:

• Mandatory/clinical practicums: Work experience under the guidance of a licensed professional, often required for certification or licensing. At ³Õºº¾ãÀÖ²¿, practicums are key to our Primary Care Paramedicine and Advanced Care Paramedicine programs, where students gain field experience with BC Ambulance Service.
• Community research projects: Students collaborate with community partners on research project to solve a specific real-world problem. In an emergency management course, for example, teams work with local organizations on emergency preparedness projects, applying their program knowledge to develop practical solutions.
• Community-engaged learning: Students work with community organizations to apply classroom learning in real-life settings. In law enforcement courses, for example, students gain hands-on experience with community policing offices through projects like foot patrols, clean-ups, and workshops, while reflecting on their experiences in seminars and engaging in community activities.
• Field Experience: Students gain valuable hands-on experience in their field through optional placements. In one conflict resolution course, students complete 110+ hours in the field, focusing on mediation and restorative justice. Community care licensing officer students can also add a practicum for field experience if needed.
